The Sixteenth Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition is set to take place from July 15 to 19, 2024, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. This year, the competition adopts a hybrid format, with the final rounds being held in person at the esteemed venue. However, the preliminary rounds will be conducted virtually from May 14 to 21, 2024. This innovative approach allows participants from all corners of the globe to engage in meaningful discourse, transcending physical boundaries.
The World Moot is open to undergraduate and masters students from all universities worldwide. The competition encourages gender diversity by inviting teams of two students, ideally comprising individuals of different genders, from each participating university. These teams are required to submit heads of argument for a hypothetical human rights case, demonstrating their analytical and persuasive skills.
The competition employs a rigorous selection process. The top 10 teams from each of the five United Nations regions are chosen to participate in the online preliminary rounds. These 50 teams, based on the highest memorial grades, then advance to argue both sides of the hypothetical case before a panel of human rights experts and judges of international tribunals. The 16 best teams proceed to the in-person Octo-final rounds, presided over by international human rights experts.
To be eligible for the competition, applicants must be citizens of a Commonwealth member state and studying at a university within a Commonwealth member state. Additionally, they must demonstrate a need for economic support to participate in the World Moot, emphasizing accessibility and inclusivity.
Recognizing the financial constraints faced by many students, the competition offers a scholarship worth 5000 British Pounds. This scholarship is divided between the two students, known as oralists, from Commonwealth countries who successfully qualify to take part in the preliminary rounds of the World Moot. It serves as a valuable means of support, allowing deserving individuals to participate in this prestigious event.
