Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College, Puducherry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India, is organizing the All India Moot Court Competition from March 8th to 10th, 2024. This prestigious event aims to promote consumer protection literacy among law students and raise awareness about consumer rights in India.
Established in 1972 by the Government of Puducherry, Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College is renowned for its excellence in legal education. Affiliated to Pondicherry University and approved by the Bar Council of India, this esteemed institution offers a comprehensive curriculum that covers various aspects of law. Consumer protection law is an integral part of the undergraduate law curriculum. It is essential for law students to be aware of the issues and recent trends in the consumer protection arena at both the national and international levels. The Consumer Protection Act of 1986 was enacted to safeguard the rights of consumers. However, with the evolving landscape of commerce, it became evident that the Act needed to be updated to address emerging challenges.
To bridge the gaps in the 1986 Act, the Parliament passed the Consumer Protection Act in 2019. This new legislation aims to provide a more comprehensive and robust mechanism to protect and strengthen consumer interests and rights. It covers issues such as product liability, consumer contracts with service providers or manufacturers, and the e-commerce industry. The Act also focuses on preventing unfair trade practices, adulteration of food, misleading advertisements, defective products, black marketing, scams, and frauds in digital markets.
In light of the importance of consumer welfare and the protection of consumer rights, Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College, Puducherry, has taken the initiative to organize the All India Moot Court Competition. This competition serves as a platform to empower law students, promote inclusive education on consumer protection law, and create awareness about consumer rights in India.
